Top reasons to live in Spain

Find out why it’s one of the best options for teleworking

If you are lucky enough to be one of the 16% of the world’s companies that are 100%  remote and can choose your place of work, here are more than 5 reasons why you should  consider coming to telework in Spain.

It is not new to hear that Spain is one of the preferred destinations for tourists. For 10 years,  HSBC has conducted an annual survey and study among more than 20,000 professionals who  live abroad for work reasons. In 2020 Spain dropped from 4th (2019) best country in the world  to live in to 5th (2020). An impressive ranking.

In Numbeo’s ranking of the nations that are part of Europe, Spain is placed in the 13th position  of the countries with the best quality of life in 2021.

For those of you who are from Spain, there is no need to tell you that we are considered one of  the best countries to live in, but it is necessary to provide some data, so that others can assess  whether Spain is a good country or not.

Are you still wondering why?

Unbeatable climate

If there is one thing Spain can be proud of, it is its climate. Considered, in fact, the best climate  in Europe, while degrees are falling in the continent, in Spain they remain at a temperate  temperature in many of the regions.

This fact is advantageous, not only because we can tan in the sun, but also because of the  benefits it produces to the mood of the people, the fact of having so many hours of sunshine.

This is one of the reasons that contribute to spend a lot of time outdoors and enjoy a multitude  of leisure activities.

Of course, you can always count on climatic diversity depending on the month of the year and  the area. Do not expect to find the same climate in the north as in the south of the country.

Cultural diversity

Stereotypes aside, each region of Spain has its own way of being. All the Autonomous  Communities are home to a high cultural and artistic level that stems from the different  historical stages through which Spain has passed. Spain has been home to Romans, Iberians,  Moors and French. This has made Spanish traditions and customs very varied, diverse and  surprising.

Visiting each city in Spain is learning by traveling to a different historical era.

Rich, healthy and varied gastronomy

What ends up on Spanish tables every day is as delicious as it is healthy, and above all  infinitely diverse. Spanish gastronomy ranks among the best in the world.

It is a cuisine of origin that oscillates between rural and coastal styles, and represents a  diversity that is the fruit of many cultures, as well as landscapes and climates. It could be said  that some forms of eating typical of Spanish regions have become internationalized, such as  tapas.

You can feel safe

Spain is one of the safest countries in the world. This information can be found in the Global  Peace Index, where they make a study evaluating the levels of presence and absence of violence.

Feeling safe in the place where you live means quality of life. It is the tranquility of living in a  house, sleeping in it or going away and knowing that no one will break into it illegally.

A secure environment allows for greater integration among neighbors and allows each of its  inhabitants to enjoy the common spaces.

Putting all the above factors together, we get the last reason.

Friendliness of its people

The reputation of the Spaniards precedes them, they are friendly and easy-going people. They are not afraid to start a conversation with a stranger as they would with a member of their  own family.

After all, we are social beings and we like people who inspire confidence and make us feel at  home. In addition, it remains to add that they are also curious people, and are always willing to  interact and meet new people.

Good Internet network coverage

Internet speed in Spain is 135.73Mbps on average, according to the Speedtest Global Index  study that measures the average speed achieved in different countries. This figure puts Spain in  11th place in the world ranking, which for remote workers/digital nomads is a great  advantage.

Japan, Liechtenstein and New Zealand are very close to surpassing Spain’s Internet speed, which  are right on our heels.

Our country continues to climb positions in this world ranking of Internet speed and the key to  further improvement is the large deployment of fiber optics.

We cannot complain about the development made by the companies in the sector so that we can  enjoy a fairly complete fiber optic network. This has allowed us to have one of the fastest  Internet speeds in the world.

In short, having fiber in our home or office is undoubtedly one of the most important reasons for  your next trip to Spain

The work culture is changing, we are changing and sometimes that means that new opportunities are opening up, such as remote working, workations or staycations. The “beginning of the year” does not have to be so dramatic. In this post we want to give you ideas so “going back to the office” this winter can be a real pleasure:

  • The Canary Islands: The truth is that the Canary Islands have been very well positioned themselves as a great destination for Work & Play. With an enviable climate, a great hotel infrastructure and all the necessary services, it is normal for those who have already enjoyed it to say that it is right now the cradle of digital nomads.
  • Malaga: This city has always been and will always be, a destination that does not stop reinventing itself. With a vibrant cultural agenda, a mild climate and one of the best transportation and infrastructure hubs in Spain, it has many ballots to become one of the first destinations on the list for a workation this winter.
  • Valencia: The city of science and technology. Telecommute surrounded by culture and technology and also views of the sea. A very modern city with very good connections by land, air and sea. You also have the Balearic Islands very close as a strong point.
  • Madrid: Madrid, truly the city that never sleeps. If you want an infinity of plans, the best coworkings, hotels where to live and work and leisure options, Madrid is your city. Even during this last year, Madrid has stood out due to a growing demand from people who want to enjoy it and the truth about Madrid is that you can never have enough of it.
  • Seville: Seville has a song praising how the city has a special color, and we have to agree! Seville has been one of the most popular destinations for teleworking this last year. It has headquarters of various large corporations, an incredible quality of life, you have access to the best beaches in under two hours, as well as various spaces where you can live and telecommute, so yes, it is a very good option to go this winter.
  • Cádiz: It is not necessary for the New York Times to select Cádiz as one of its star destinations worldwide to know that we have a gem. If in addition to wanting to telecommute and enjoy the best beaches, you are also a lover of nautical sports in its wildest state, especially kitesurfing, surfing and windsurfing, the province of Cádiz is your place this winter.

But what is a workation? It is a mix between work & vacation and that means that now that we do not have to be 100% in the office we can consider living and working from anywhere, without having to wait for August to enjoy a change of scene. But how to do it the easy way? Can you really live in a hotel and at hotel prices? The answer is Yes, from the COliving Hotels platform (link to the listing) it is already possible to book hotels on a monthly basis as we adapt to the new ways we want to live. But it is not a solution only for workations, there is a new type of traveler and temporary resident, from digital nomads and remote workers to singles, separated, teachers and health professionals looking for an easy and temporary residence, and we are here to make life easier to all of them!

If what you need is a hotel as a temporary residence, you are in luck, we have everything ready for you, you only worry about choosing the destination, the dates and being able to live in hotels at the moment of check in and check out.

So … Do you already know where to do a workation this winter?

Hotel coliving has been recognized by the United Nations as one of the best ideas to reactivate tourism worldwide thanks to our company, COliving Hotels.

Our team, selected among the 30 best ideas of more than 600 projects worldwide, is “over the moon” with the simple fact of thinking that the reuse, creative use of spaces and the creation of new forms for living can reach be a reality promoted from Spain.

The hotel and tourism sector has been one of the most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and that is why all responsible administrations at different levels have been and are looking for innovative solutions to reactivate this important sector of the economy.

This has been the case of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which launched the “Hospitality Challenge” which calls the “tourism leaders of the future” during the summer of 2020.

For our part, we lived through this whole paradigm shift from our homes, many of us deeply affected by the current employment situation, but all this did not stop our desire to create new ideas with which to support our sector.

This is how we connected for the first time, online, and by presenting ourselves to the 1st “Malaga Tourism Challenge” Hackathon of ideas, of which we were winners. It was that impulse that made us also present it to the “Hospitality Challenge” organized by the UNWTO and that is, digitization has also brought entrepreneurs and administrations closer together, let’s be positive!

Be that as it may, we never thought that we would be among the 30 best ideas worldwide from a selection of more than 600 projects!

The training support for already being in that first selection consists of a full scholarship to study one of the most innovative Masters in any of the reputed International Schools of Tourism. In addition to all the support and momentum that comes with being in that selection.

But what did we really propose? Simply to give a creative use to empty hotel rooms, connecting them with the most current needs of residents and new types of travelers, such as Coliving.

So we promoted a hybrid use of the hotel establishment so talked about today.

Our team, which works completely remotely between Seville, Cádiz, Madrid and New York, created the idea thinking about their own accommodation needs that they themselves and the people around them had ever had, specializing in periods between one month and one one year.

coliving-hotels-team

The inclusion in the TOP 30 of ‘tourism leaders of the future’ of the UNWTO happened in the middle of the launch of our platform, a phase in which we are being supported by the business accelerator Minerva, belonging to the Government of Andalucía in Spain and Vodafone.

Immensely grateful for all the acknowledgments and support received, our team does not lose sight of what our true objectives are: to develop a good product that positions COliving Hotels among the three best ideas worldwide, attracting funding and support that allow us to scale the platform, reactivate the tourism sector nationally and internationally and to generate employment while maintaining sustainable development at the same time.

With more enthusiasm than ever, we are aware that we have entered the market in a far from easy situation, but we are convinced that great opportunities are born from real crises, so we hope that from very little, most people will be able to consider living a season in a hotel as a standard accommodation formula.

So we want to ask you, do you want to see how the change happens and do you want to be a part of it?

It’s very clear to us!

What do we understand by COliving 4.0?

We are facing a paradigm shift to radically rethink our relationship with the environment.

Sustainability is meeting current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs, ensuring the balance between economic growth, care for the environment and social welfare.” (Brundtland Report. United Nations. 1987)

Sustainable development not only calls into question the deteriorated relationship we have with the planet. Also the relationship between people, excessive individualization, chosen and imposed solitudes. The culture of Me above Us, and of Us above everyone. And thirdly and probably the origin of our great crisis: the relationship with the imposed economy, the maximization of profits above anything else.

From COliving Hotels we reflect on how hotel coliving faces and rethinks these three relationships.

1. Rethinking the relationship with the planet, our common home, the Earth.

Buildings pollute four times more than cars. Buildings, according to CE, continue to contribute 56% of pollution in our cities compared to 13% that comes from car emissions.

It is a silent threat.

Now that “everyone is sustainable” (surely you and your company say that you are), more and more people worry about climate change, we have 10-12 years to take drastic measures according to the latest IPCC report , biodiversity loss, deforestation, resource depletion, the time is running out! Saskia Sassen exclaimed in his last conference in Madrid, chemical pollution, we have created more than 100,000 new chemical substances since the industrial revolution, and we used have the oceans like a garbage dump full of plastics.

The hotel sector has an enormous responsibility to rethink the relationship with our environment.

From COliving Hotels we realized that to facilitate access to housing, the negative impact of building new buildings or rehabilitating existing ones can be reduced, simply with what we call hotel coliving, a new accommodation solution that allows renting hotel rooms for months in major cities in exchange for an affordable comprehensive income.

COliving Hotels is a good example of a circular economy strategy, which encourages the adaptation of hybrid hotels with new uses of spaces, services and technological innovation.

In this way, empty hotel rooms are reused to give them an outlet and a new life with re-marketing and revaluation strategies.

2. Rethinking relationships between people

Recent times have built an increasingly individualized society, we have broken the traditional social structures to build a digitally hyperconnected society, but a liquid, new and uncertain society, with great possibilities and great forgetfulness.

This has been building more and more chosen solitudes, a world of new relationships that is part of our evolution but also generates imposed solitudes, one of the biggest problems in our society.

We still have memory and we know how previous generations lived, times when people went out to ask for condiments from the neighbor or you were in the streets of your neighborhood and chatted with people around you.

Now we don’t know our neighbors. We are in full reflection of our current way of living, it seems that we have realized some of the problems.

The “co-everything” revolution, the collaborative culture are concepts and reflections that emerge “bottom-up” by collectives with awareness of the problem.

COliving Hotels, as a differential value, generates the experience of access to a Community social network aimed at digital nomads, remote workers or temporary residents who in one place can have access to work, interaction and entertainment. What really transforms COliving Hotels is that hotels are no longer a collection of disconnected rooms for short-term stays, now common spaces matter and travelers come to stay for period of time.

Private use is reduced to rooms with bathrooms and common space, it is maximized with extensive common areas where users seek access to services and to interact with people with whom they share life and work experiences.

We contribute to achieving SDG 11: Make cities more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, we co-create a new type of collaborative tourism (temporary citizens), which honor the local and its community (permanent citizens), united by the trust, technology, respect for the environment and a sustainable life.

coliving-4-hotel

3. Rethinking the relationship with the economy

The economy is and has been focused on the short-term, like politics, with a short vision of the future, a short view, and this has been the great disagreement with sustainability, a necessary long-term, long-term view.

The hotel sector must turn the high beams on, and look long term, at the entire life cycle and use of hotel assets.

The main advantage of pivoting the hotel coliving: the seasonal adjustment.

“The excessive seasonality of some destinations endangers their recovery,” says Braintrust consultancy, which has carried out an analysis on this factor so characteristic of Spanish tourism.

He argues that the new post-COVID-19 stage is an opportunity to correct this situation and transform the current model with a focus on sustainability, an essential condition for receiving aid from European funds.

At the management level, seasonal adjustment helps avoid overeuse of resources at specific times of the year and does not make it necessary to size the infrastructures excessively.

In the relation to the environment, it allows a better use and management of resources since their use is constant throughout the year and does not experience large peaks that are combined with periods of zero use.

In the economic sphere, it facilitates the construction of a more solid business fabric by making businesses open throughout the year. Circumstance that, in turn, contributes to improve the rooting of the population, stabilizing employment, and not having a pool of temporary workers who come and go from the location.

From the point of view of the traveler, it avoids crowded destinations. And, from the point of view of the resident, it improves the habitability of cities, reducing tourist-phobia ”.

COliving Hotels, is a new innovative channel that makes it easier for hotels to achieve the objectives of diversification and differentiation of the hotel product, sustainability and digitization that the sector requires to adapt to the new needs demanded by the market such as “smart tourism”, “Circular economy”, “energy efficiency”, “transformation of destinations”.

Rebuilding these three relationships from COliving Hotels is what we call Coliving 4.0, but it will not be possible if we do not rebuild our ways of thinking or what Albert Einstein taught us: “Problems cannot be solved from the same level of consciousness that they were created”. And that I also think is changing, more and more people have this awareness.

It is time to act. If not now when? if not us who?
